Today more than 600,000 Americans travel every year for religious or pilgrimage purposes. Many travel with their church, religious organization, or individually. These experiences are life changing. There is no greater feeling than standing at the very site where pivotal religious events took place -- whether at Mount Sinai, where Moses received the Ten Commandments; in Bethany- beyond-the -Jordan, where John the Baptist baptized Jesus; or in Greece, where Apostle Paul preached. Only with religious travel can you experience your faith in every possible way- physically, spiritually, socially, intellectually, and emotionally.
Travel has long been a part of faith history and tradition. Abraham was one of the first to embark on a faith-based journey. In later years, the Israelites were required to pilgrimage to the temple in Jerusalem at least once a year. Much of the Gospel of John is centered on Jesus' travels and journeys. During the Middle Ages, the faithful traveled throughout Europe and Biblical Lands, visiting sacred sites and destinations. Today travel remains as popular and integral as ever for people of faith. Although the means of transportation have changed, the reasons for embarking on such journeys remain the same. Religious travel provided a personal, intimate experience of one's faith.
